How metro fares work

Almost every Indian metro is priced by distance. The operator divides the network into slabs, a short trip falls in the cheapest slab, a longer one moves up, and your ticket is the price of the slab your journey lands in. The slab boundaries and prices differ by city, so we publish each operator's own table on its city page, alongside a calculator that gives an indicative fare between any two stations.

Our estimate uses the straight-line distance between stations, while the real fare follows the along-track route, so treat our number as a guide and confirm on the operator's app. Read the full methodology →

Frequently asked questions

How are metro fares calculated in India?

Nearly every Indian metro charges by distance. The network is split into distance slabs, for example up to 2 km is one price, 2 to 5 km the next, and so on, and your fare is the slab your trip falls into. Each operator sets its own slab boundaries and prices, which is why the same distance can cost differently in Delhi, Bengaluru or Chennai.

Is the fare on MetroFares the exact fare I will pay?

It is indicative. We show each operator's published distance slabs, and our calculator estimates a fare from the straight-line distance between two stations. The official fare follows the actual along-track route the train takes, which is usually a little longer, and smart-card or off-peak discounts can lower it. Always confirm on the operator's official app before you travel.

How many metro systems does MetroFares cover?

We cover 11 operational metro systems across 1,247 stations in India, with fare slabs, station lists, a route map and a fare calculator for each.

Where does the station and fare data come from?

Station names, lines and locations are compiled from publicly available sources. Fare slabs come from each operator's published distance-based fare tables. See our methodology for the full picture.
